Needing a victory to clinch the Big Ten regular-season title, No. 5 Wisconsin edged host Michigan State 2-1 on sophomore forward Cole Caufield s second goal of the game nearly eight minutes into the third period.
The winner was Caufield s NCAA-leading 25th goal of the season. He scored his first goal with 16 seconds left in the second period on a power play.
Dylan Holloway, after getting a turnover behind the Spartans net, set up Caufield s second goal from the near slot.
The Badgers (19-8-1, 17-6-1 Big Ten), who passed the Gophers for first place with a 4-0 win over the Spartans on Friday, will now get a bye into the semifinals of the conference tournament. It will be held March 14-16 in South Bend, Ind.

With not much to play for Saturday afternoon for the Michigan State hockey team and a Big Ten regular season championship on the line for their opponent, Wisconsin, the Spartans could have easily mailed this one in.
They did nothing of the sort.
Yes, it was a 2-1 defeat at the hands of No. 5 Wisconsin, but the effort, passion and determination to win was there for MSU for the first time in a long time.

Michigan State hockey’s lethargic season continued Friday, this time with a 4-0 loss to No. 5 Wisconsin at Munn Ice Arena.
The first period could not have started much worse for MSU, who found themselves down by a goal just two minutes in. Starting goaltender Drew DeRidder made the initial stop, but a long rebound in front of the net somehow found the stick of Wisconsin center Tarek Baker
