HOOPESTON â Normally, the Hoopeston Education Association, which represents the districtâs teachers and support staff, spends its dues sending members to conferences and other national and state-level union events.
Because of the pandemic, those conferences didnât happen this year, so the union decided to use those funds to find a way to help both its members and the community.
âBecause of those reduced expenditures, we had some extra money, and we arenât a business,â President Dylan Swank said. âWe take in money so we can spend it. And we didnât have a good way of spending that money on association events, conferences, other direct association-related activities. So, given that this year has hit a lot of our members really hard and has hit a lot of local businesses really hard, we knew that we wanted to be able to give back some of the extra money.â
