Druck Chemie is closing its Burnley operation in the UK, with Graphichem set to take over sales and distribution for the firm’s products in the UK.

Germany-headquartered Druck Chemie is owned by Langley Holdings. It said the closure was the result of a global review of its sales operations.
Six roles could go as a result, with consultations underway with the affected employees.
Managing director Mirko Kern said: “The UK market is very competitive and it obviously means we are forced to make difficult choices. Our focus now is on supporting our UK staff affected by the closure.

Langley Holdings has reported 2020 results for a “a year like no other”, while its press manufacturing subsidiary Manroland Sheetfed has “opened the taps” and returned to full production in anticipation of a post-Covid surge in demand.

Chairman Tony Langley said all of the group’s businesses were affected by the pandemic in one way or another. Group sales were down 6.5% at €766.8m (£662m) and profits more than halved, falling to €28.5m (2019: €59.9m). However, the group finished the year still with zero debt, and with a cash balance up €49.1m at €288m.

Heidelberg has sold the Print Media Academy building across the street from the town’s central station. Although the glass and steel structure was somewhat symbolic – it may ultimately be seen as a re-enactment of a heavy metal fantasy that went awry as the demand for sheetfed offset presses declined over the past two decades. It is reported that the building is sold to a Luxembourg-based investment company for a low double-digit million Euro sum. The erstwhile owners will continue to lease some office space in a building in a prime location that must have been expensive to build and maintain.

It’s the end of an era for Heidelberg, which has sold its landmark Print Media Academy building in the heart of the German town as part of its ongoing series of asset sales and disposals.

The Print Media Academy (PMA) was a high-profile project under then-Heidelberg CEO Hartmut Mehdorn, and was built to mark Heidelberg’s 150
th anniversary. It was officially opened in April 2000 by Germany’s federal chancellor Gerhard Schröder.
At Drupa the same year, Heidelberg booked €1.5bn-worth of orders, the equivalent of around £1bn at the time.

Heidelberg is selling off a chunk of its main Wiesloch-Walldorf site in Germany and will make around €50m (£45m) from its latest asset sale, with more space at the facility earmarked for future disposal.
Wiesloch-Walldorf: sale involves ‘old’ production and assembly halls and car parks
The Wiesloch-Walldorf site is some 840,000sqm in total. Heidelberg is initially selling around 130,000sqm to specialist developer VGP Group, which will turn it into a new industrial and commercial park.
A further 140,000sqm is slated for future sale, meaning Heidelberg’s occupation of the site will eventually shrink by some 32%.
