North Carolina will have its first monument at the state capitol honoring African American contributions, and its roots have Charlotte ties.
Located in Raleigh, the NC Freedom Park was the final project from the late Phil Freelon. The internationally recognized architect, who died in 2019 from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), designed Charlotte’s Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Arts + Culture and helped design the then-Charlotte Bobcats arena.

Feb. 7 Tacoma-based jazz and blues radio station KNKX is getting $225,000 to bolster its jazz music programming.
The Doris Duke Charitable Foundation announced Jan. 28 that it s providing $1.3 million to five radio stations across the nation to create a partnership in the form of a Jazz Media Lab. Each of these stations has been committed to jazz a long time and is very active in their local communities with jazz artists and education, said KNKX general manger Joey Cohn.
