Sea turtle nesting season runs March to October in Florida, however, the creatures can always be seen at Tipsy Turtle. The Sanibel restaurant and bar has adopted the shelled reptile as its mascot and fearless leader of family fun.
Turtle photos, paintings and sculptures in all shapes, sizes and colors adorn the restaurant inside and out.
“One day a child came up to me and said he counted 577 of them,” owner Eve Alves said, laughing. “It’s total turtle ambiance, like the Toys R Us of turtle land.”
Tipsy Turtle occupies the Periwinkle Way space that, for decades, housed The Jacaranda, an island dining institution, known simply as The Jac to locals. In 2017, Alves bought the iconic restaurant and gutted it, creating a lighter, brighter, more nautical looking space with a large granite bar.
