Chicken-sized dinosaur with mane | Dinosaur fossil found in Brazil reveals new species that was chicken-sized, had mane & fur

Updated Dec 21, 2020 | 13:58 IST The scientists have not been able to determine whether the fossil is a male or female. But based on their findings of modern birds, they believe it to be a male. Discovery of chicken-sized dinosaur amazes scientists  |  Photo Credit: Twitter Earlier this year, a 120-million-year-old fossil, that was discovered in China helped researchers and scientists to bridge the gap between dinosaurs and modern birds. After researchers analysed and studied the fossil, the species was dubbed as ‘Wulong bohaiensis’ or the dancing dragon’ and described as a strange mix between a bird and a dinosaur. The researchers from China and the United States said the dinosaur was about the size of a raven with a long and bony tail. Further study revealed its body was covered with feathers with two plumes at the end of the tail. The specimen has feathers on its limbs and tail that we associate with adult birds, but it had other fea

World s earliest python is identified from fossil remains unearthed in a German quarry

Messelopython freyi remains were recovered from a quarry near Darmstadt The head and body of Messelopython freyi are almost completely preserved Scientists have identified the world s earliest python from 47 million-year-old fossils recovered from a quarry in southwest Germany.  Remains of the new python species, called Messelopython freyi, were discovered in Messel Pit, a UNESCO World Heritage Site near the German city of Darmstadt. ADVERTISEMENT Researchers report in a new paper that the completely preserved species had a length of just over three feet (one metre).  M. freyi, both a new species and a new genus, is the oldest known fossil record of a python anywhere in the world, researchers say.

Chicken-sized prehistoric dinosaur shines new light on avian development

By JULIAN SHEA in London | China Daily Global | Updated: 2020-12-17 09:35 Share CLOSE Well-preserved remains offered many clues about how the creature may have looked. BOB NICHOLLS/PALEOCREATIONS.COM 2020 Scientists may have made a breakthrough in understanding the origins of how birds show off their plumage after finding a previously unknown chicken-sized species with long fur and stiff ribbon-type projections in a collection of samples at the State Museum of Natural History, in Karlsruhe, Germany. An international team, led by the museum s Dino Frey and David Martill and Robert Smyth from the University of Portsmouth in England, made the discovery of what has been described as one of the most elaborate-looking prehistoric creatures ever known.

Flamboyance in the age of dinosaurs

Its flamboyance was likely used to dazzle mates or intimidate foe, the researchers say, and sheds new light on how birds such as peacocks inherited their ability to show off. The first non-avian dinosaur described from Brazil’s Crato Formation, a shallow inland sea laid down about 110 million years ago, it is also the first from the ancient supercontinent of Gondwana with preserved skin.
