DeSoto City Council Passes Ban the Box Policy
DESOTO, TX Tuesday night, in a 6-1 vote, DeSoto City Council approved a Ban-the-Box policy joining the City of Austin, 36 states, and over 150 cities and counties in implementing hiring policies that aim to give everyone a fair chance at employment. “Ban the Box” refers to the policy of removing the conviction history check-box from job applications. If employers must ask about convictions, they can ask later in the hiring process.
“Ban-the-Box is a commonsense policy that aims to remove job barriers for people with records,” said DeSoto City Council Member Candice Quarles. “DeSoto is joining hundreds of other cities and counties in implementing this policy to shift hiring practices so that we focus more on qualifications and less on something that happened in the past. DeSoto City Council Votes Yes on Fire Station Renovation Design
Fire Station #3 Renovation Project Gets Green Light
DESOTO – After the recent cold snap and a number of house fires in the Best Southwest area including a fatal house fire in DeSoto, council gave a nod earlier this week for the city to execute an agreement with Brown Reynolds Watford Architects, Inc. for $248,600 for the Fire Station #3 renovation project.
The existing fire station, located at 1301 W. Pleasant Run Road, was constructed in the mid-1980’s. Over the years, the facility has had limited renovations. It was originally constructed for males in barrack-style accommodations with limited privacy and sleeping quarters, restrooms and showers.

The dust has settled on DeSoto’s mayoral election, with Rachel Proctor earning more than 60% of the vote to complete the late Mayor Curtistene McCowan’s unexpired term.
Proctor, a former mayor pro tem, thanked voters for supporting what she called her “Back to the Basics” platform and pledged to be accountable to her constituents.
“I’m excited to join the efforts of the current Council as we continue to work to address the needs of our residents, businesses, and faith community most impacted by the current pandemic while leveling as much support for our city as possible,” she said.
