Calamity Jane s store enforces no-mask rule

KINGSBURY — Calamity Jane’s Firearms and Fine Shoes store is the last frontier when it comes to wearing masks. Not only can people browse maskless, but owner and Kingsbury Town Board member Jane Havens does not allow anyone to wear a mask in the store. Employees also do not wear masks. Havens cited security as her reason for not letting anyone wear a mask. She’s worried that people will rob the Dix Avenue store. Anyone who refuses to take off their mask in the store is ordered to leave. This has prompted numerous complaints to Washington and Warren counties, which enforce the state’s mask law. But Havens said she has not been ticketed or told she was doing anything wrong.

Under the red, white and blue smoke stacks of the Rouge steel plant, volunteers from UAW Local No. 600 and ACCESS worked to load plastic totes into waiting cars. Each tote contains personal protective items, such as masks and gloves, cleaning products, hygiene, games for the kids, toilet paper, paper towel, sanitizer and laundry supplies. EDITORIAL: Apartment complex is suitable for Dean Road in Kingsbury

Arguing that property should not be developed because it’s hasn’t been in the past is not persuasive. Every property was, at some point, just as undeveloped as the 67 acres of woods and fields on Dean Road in Kingsbury where Bill Nikas wants to build an apartment complex. What matters when deciding whether a development is suitable is how it will affect the local environment and whether it follows local zoning. Nikas’ project must undergo site plan review and be approved by the Planning Board, because that is required for “multifamily dwellings” in that area of town. The Planning Board previously approved plans for the parcel by other developers for a 351-unit townhouse complex of 117 buildings and a senior and assisted living center, but both projects fell through.
