The urgency with which research is being conducted into the effects of smoke on winegrapes has intensified as bushfires become a more regular feature of vintage in Australia. Many of the decisions about how to manage smoke affected fruit are being made with the help of laboratory tests but as research continues to develop so too do the tools available to help producers with these decisions. Tasman District councillor Dean McNamara says he’s happy to be proven wrong over a claim the cost of the Waimea dam may be “closer to $300m”. “Right now, we re on track for that $158m spend and each day as we come further up out of the ground, that risk gradually dissipates,” Scott said on April 7 at site of the dam build in the Lee Valley, about 36km southeast of Nelson. “At this point, we see ourselves funnelling in on that $158m. There s a bit of risk range around it – it could be slightly lower, it could be slightly higher.”
