The country’s biggest farm can be a dangerous and unforgiving place in winter, users warn as a charitable trust legally challenges its seasonal closure. The publicly-owned Molesworth Recreation Reserve covers 180,000 hectares of tussock land, rivers and mountains between Marlborough’s Awatere Valley, Hanmer Springs, Tasman District and the Kaikōura ranges. We know we need to get this down to 600-800 kilotonnes by 2030 to have a moderate chance of avoiding terrible outcomes. We weigh ourselves to see if our diet and exercise programme is having the desired effect. We check our bank account to see if our savings plan is working. Nelson City Council has made a good start; it has measured the emissions from its own operations, some of which involve community services, such as waste management, and water and sewage services.
