Building a stronger Tasmanian workforce

Jeremy Rockliff,Minister for Education and Training The Tasmanian Liberal Government has a clear plan to secure Tasmania’s future, including backing jobs in the state’s building and construction industry through a new industry workforce action plan released today. Skills Tasmania and Keystone Tasmania (formerly the Tasmanian Building and Construction Industry Training Board) in consultation with industry have laid out the Building and Construction Workforce Action Plan focussed on five key areas: – Attracting new people to the sector; – Mentoring for success and retention; – Growing and sustaining diversity; – Sector-based strategic planning. Importantly, a number of the specific initiatives listed in the plan are already in development or underway.

Ensuring safe workplaces for all Tasmanians

Elise Archer,Minister for Building and Construction The Tasmanian Government is committed to ensuring that workplaces are safe and that workers return home to their family and friends safe and well at the end of each day. Today, Shane Broad once again demonstrated his lack of understanding as to the role of Worksafe Tasmania, which operates independently of Government. The role of the independent Regulator, as specified under the Work Health and Safety Act 2012, is clear. Dr Broad clearly doesn’t understand that Tasmania’s independent Work Health and Safety Regulator undertakes compliance monitoring, incident response and education activities, and investigation and enforcement, to ensure safe workplaces throughout Tasmania.

Haddad shows she doesn t understand law

Elise Archer,Attorney-General In another embarrassing gaffe for Labor, Shadow Attorney-General, Ella Haddad, has demonstrated she doesn’t actually understand the role the Attorney-General plays as First Law Officer of Tasmania. Cleary pressured by her union masters in question time today, Ms Haddad has embarrassed herself in, once again, failing to understand that it is critical the Government ensures Tasmania’s laws are interpreted appropriately. Our court system operates on the basis that a court will have two parties before it to put forward opposing views – this assists the court to determine the proper interpretation of the law. In cases such as this, where there is no proper party to put an opposing view, it falls to the Attorney-General to appear and fulfil that role as contradictor.

Protecting Tasmanians rights

Guy Barnett,Minister for Resources During the greatest health and economic challenge in more than a generation, jobs are more important than ever. Every job counts. This year we have seen a significant escalation in threatening radical protest actions from extremist groups. Unfortunately on a regular basis, Tasmanians are being threatened and harassed for simply going about their legal or everyday work. Today, the Bob Brown Foundation have launched their latest protest action invading the work site of a mining company on the West Coast directly threatening the rights of Tasmanians working at Venture Minerals’ Riley Creek operation. I am advised that these extremist protestors have invaded the work site interfered with vehicles on site and attached themselves to poles in the vehicles.
