When Upton Country Park and other outdoor spaces reopened

WHILE England waits for attractions to reopen, the Echo remembers when we were doing the same 20 years ago. Following the foot-and-mouth crisis in 2001, many outdoor areas closed to the public, including Upton Country Park, Poole. The 100-acre country park closed on March 3, 2001, before reopening to visitors in May 2001 following a review of restrictions. Restrictions were also lifted on the majority of footpaths around Poole. Areas close to livestock remained off-limits and visitors were advised to keep dogs on short leads and use disinfectant where provided. They were also urged not to leave waste food or feed any animal, and not to go near sheep, cows, goats, pigs or deer.

Talbot Heath pupils to walk 26 miles in aid of Myeloma UK

FOUR pupils from Talbot Heath School are taking on a 26 mile challenge along the Jurassic Coast to raise money for a cancer charity. Year eight pupils Emily Baggott, Lola House, Bonnie Sandeman-Lomax and Nancy Taylor will be taking on the trek on May 15 in aid of Myeloma UK. Emily, 12, lost her dad Jeremy Baggott, 50, to multiple myeloma just before Christmas. The group of friends decided to raise money for the charity close to Emily s heart, and have already raised £1,600 ahead of their gruelling walk. Lola said: In these awful situations it’s hard to know how to really help a friend. So we came up with the idea of this walk and it suddenly brought us all together in support. It showed Emily how much we care and we want to be beside her every step of the way on this challenge.

Shirley Williams was a former pupil of Talbot Heath School

The former Labour minister broke away from the party to form the Social Democrat Party. Her current party, the Liberal Democrats, announced her death. She was a former pupil of Talbot Heath School. In a statement Lib Dem leader Sir Ed Davey paid tribute to Baroness Williams of Crosby as a “true trailblazer” who had inspired millions. As a Labour minister, Lady Williams, served in the governments of Harold Wilson and James Callaghan in the 1970s rising to become education secretary. However in 1981, having become disillusioned with Labour’s drift to the left under Michael Foot, she was one of the original “Gang of Four” to leave the party to form the new centrist SDP.
