But, first .
The Broncos don’t even know who, when and where they pick in the first round and the what and the why of the 49ers at No. 3.
The NFL draft will begin at 6 p.m. Mountain Daylight Time. Beginning with the Jaguars, each team will have a maximum of 10 minutes to make a selection. Jacksonville and the New York Jets could announce their choices Trevor Lawrence and Zach Wilson within seconds, but the two franchises, the league and the networks will drag out the drama.
The Broncos’ pick actually could be anywhere from fourth to ninth (the current spot) to 32nd, (the last first-round position) and might be declared publicly at any time from 6:15 to 9:30 by commissioner Roger Goodell with Lake Erie as the backdrop in Cleveland.

As with all of these draft profiles, I obviously don’t know what George Paton is planning for in the first round. There’s just no harm in speculating or sizing up the options.
Now that my disclaimer’s out of the way, we’re going to look at Rashawn Slater, the Northwestern offensive tackle who is expected to be a first-round pick (possibly even a top 10).
With the Broncos going at #9, choosing him is an option. This is assuming they don’t go for Oregon’s Penei Sewell (or that another team doesn’t snag Sewell first).

If you haven’t followed the Denver Broncos over the last couple of seasons, well, I don’t blame you. To catch you up to speed, the introduction of general manager George Paton simply summarized the state of Denver’s organization. “George Patrick, er, George Paton to everybody” former general manager John Elway so eloquently stated when introducing the Broncos’ new general manager in January. It was sloppy, embarrassing, and just not a good look as Elway handed off the reins. It was a simple yet telling statement that so clearly summarized the Broncos over the last half-decade.
