Too many dollar stores? Canton councilmen question number of shops

CANTON – Travel a few miles in any direction and you re bound to pass a store with dollar in its name. Dollar General and Family Dollar each have five stores in Canton, and Dollar Tree has four stores within the city limits. City Council recently approved a replat for the future site of a sixth Dollar General, but it also prompted members to question the apparent glut of dollar stores.  When you stand at the site where this proposed Dollar General s going in, you can actually see the sign of another dollar store, Councilman John Mariol II, D-7, said. He begrudgingly voted in favor of the change on April 5, citing the council s inability to legally deny the development and his fear that an oversaturated market will lead to vacant buildings. Mariol and Councilman Greg Hawk, D-1  who cast a protest vote in opposition to the replat  said they want to consider their options to limit new dollar stores.
