Second-annual NIFA awards open for nominations By Imogen Bailey | 11 May 2021 The second-annual National Indigenous Fashion Awards (NIFA) are open for nominations.  The awards program, which was launched in 2020, celebrates the innovation, diversity and ethical practices of Australia’s First Nations peoples in fashion and textiles.  The program highlights excellence across six categories, and in 2020 awarded Peggy Griffiths, Kieren Karritpul, Maara Collective X Bula’bula Arts, Ninti One, Bede Tungutaalum and Julie Shaw with an inaugural accolade.  Excitingly, NIFA will make its debut as a physical event this year alongside the Darwin Aboriginal Art Fair and Country to Couture showcases in August in the NT. 

Piinpi exhibition opens in Canberra

19 February 2021 Australia’s first major survey of contemporary Indigenous textiles and fashion Bendigo Art Gallery’s spectacular exhibition of contemporary Indigenous fashion will open at the National Museum of Australia in Canberra on 19 February 2021 as part of a national tour. Featuring the work of Indigenous artists and designers from the inner city to remote desert art centres, Piinpi: Contemporary Indigenous Fashion celebrates Australia’s leading First Nations creatives. The exhibition comes as part of a long-standing collaboration between the Alastair Swayn Foundation and the National Museum, through the Museum’s Swayn Fellowship in Australian Design. The exhibition was curated by Bendigo Art Gallery’s First Nations Curator, Kaantju woman Shonae Hobson, and brings together around 60 works by creators and brands including Grace Lillian Lee, Lyn-Al Young, Lisa Waup x Verner, Hopevale Arts and Culture Centre, MAARA Collective, the Yarrenyty Arltere Artists, AARLI

10k views and 150 shares: Country to Couture proves huge success By Imogen Bailey | 25 January 2021 The Darwin Aboriginal Art Fair Foundation s (DAAFF) Country to Couture program clocked up over 10,000 views on Facebook when it aired on Friday.  Streamed on the NITV and Indigenous Fashion Projects Facebook pages, the event video was also shared more than 150 times and generated 97 comments from viewers.  A popular staple on the Darwin calendar, Country to Couture has been a key attraction, alongside the annual Darwin Aboriginal Art Fair since 2016. It showcases collections from Indigenous fashion labels as well as unique collaborations between Indigenous communities and well-known Australian labels.

Country Road s Elle Roseby: We can t wait to hear them 20 January 2021 Country Road has partnered with Darwin Aboriginal Art Fair Foundation (DAAFF) in support of an Indigenous design showcase. The Country To Couture program will be broadcast on the NITV Facebook page when it launches on January 22. Country Road s support follows a similar partnership with DAAFF’s National Indigenous Fashion Awards in August 2020. Country to Couture will bring its runway to screens from 7pm AEST via the NITV Facebook page and will also be re-broadcasted to the Indigenous Fashion Projects Facebook page.  A popular staple on the Darwin calendar, Country to Couture has been a key attraction, alongside the annual Darwin Aboriginal Art Fair since 2016.
