The Lions made an early splash in free agency, but things have slowed in Detroit, while business has picked up around the league.
Detroit and Romeo Okwara have reportedly agreed to a three-year, $39 million deal to keep the defensive end in town. Okwara was the team’s best defender last season and one of the top pass rushers on the free-agent market. It’s worth noting that noon Monday marked the opening of the two-day negotiating window, with players unable to sign until 4 p.m. Wednesday officially.
Especially about the tight ends.
“That’s a room that’s going to have to be rebuilt in some ways,” he said.
With Tyler Eifert and James O’Shaughnessy becoming free agents when their contracts expire on Wednesday afternoon, the four remaining tight ends under contract for 2021 have a total of 14 catches in 59 games. Eric Saubert has the most, with 10 catches for 85 yards in 40 games, but he had just three catches last season with the Jaguars.
So, yeah, a rebuild there is critical, but at least the Jaguars are doing it in a year when there are several good free agents available, as well as what is regarded as a solid draft class. With the most salary-cap space available ($74.4 million) of any team and 11 draft picks (seven in the first four rounds), the Jaguars have the ability to make significant changes and finally get good production out of a position that hasn’t really done much over the past decade.

While representatives from 30 NFL teams lined up to watch North Dakota State University quarterback Trey Lance go through his pro day on Friday, Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Urban Meyer was on the other side of the country soaking in rays of the Florida sun and outlining his team s offseason plans.
With North Dakota State holding its pro day in Fargo, ND. on Friday, Meyer was instead holding court at The Players Championship in Ponte Vedra Beach, FL., going over his team s plans for the offseason.
In the most telling act yet of what Jacksonville s priorities are when April 29 rolls around, Meyer didn t even have to mention Lance or even Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence s name. With the Jaguars holding the No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, it has been clear throughout the offseason that all signs point to Lawrence, with Friday serving as another example.
