South Bay Paddleboard season resumes as pandemic restrictions lift

Local paddleboard races, all of which were suspended last summer because of the pandemic, will resume starting June 5 with the South Bay Paddle at the Hermosa Beach pier. It will be followed by the Rock2Rock, from Catalina Island to Cabrillo Beach, on Sunday, June 27; and the Catalina Classic, from Catalina island to the Manhattan Beach Pier on Sunday August 29.

Lifeguard Captain Jeff Horn had just left La Playita on 14th Street in Hermosa Beach with a breakfast burrito when I ran into him on The Strand. We know each other from paddleboarding. Horn was head of the Junior Lifeguard program and was on his way to the Hermosa pier station for a JG meeting.

Every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday morning, surf permitting, the No. 1 Ladies’ South Bay Open Water Swim Club swims a mile in the ocean, off of Torrance Beach. Two of the club’s are over 60. The other two are over 75.
