DA to discuss Elizabeth City shooting today

May 18, 2021 PASQUOTANK COUNTY, N.C. (WAVY) Pasquotank County District Attorney R. Andrew Womble will hold a press conference Tuesday to discuss the results of an independent investigation by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation into the deputy-involved shooting death of Andrew Brown Jr. last month. Brown was killed April 21 while he was in a car on Perry Street in Elizabeth City. Pasquotank County Sheriff’s Office deputies and other law enforcement were attempting to serve a drug-related search warrant at the time. Seven deputies were initially put on administrative leave. Four have since returned to their jobs because Pasquotank Sheriff Tommy Wooten said it “was obvious” they did not have their weapons drawn.

Prosecutor Says Deputies Were Justified In The Fatal Shooting Of Andrew Brown Jr

Sarah McCammon / NPR Updated May 18, 2021 at 5:19 PM ET District Attorney Andrew Womble has declined to file charges against Pasquotank County, N.C., sheriff s deputies in the fatal shooting of Andrew Brown Jr. last month in Elizabeth City. His decision followed an inquiry by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, which presented its findings to the prosecutor. At a press conference Tuesday morning, Womble said Brown s shooting by three deputies was tragic but justified, because law enforcement officers reasonably believed they were in danger. Brown, 42, was shot and killed in his car by deputies as they arrived to carry out warrants in drug-related charges in Elizabeth City on April 21. He was killed a day after a jury found former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin guilty of murder in George Floyd s killing.

Adkins Memorial Funeral Homeowner, Gabriels Adkins, posted on social media footage of surveillance footage of a deputy vehicle on the funeral home s property. Adkins alleges that deputies drove onto his property two nights in a row to urinate. Pasquotank Sheriff Tommy Wooten provided a statement on behalf of the department: Pasquotank County is a large, often rural county. Our deputies have been working long hours, for more than a month, and sometimes our deputies need to relieve themselves when they’re far away from a restroom.
