A year ago, Irish pubs across North Jersey were gearing up for their biggest holiday of the year, St. Patrick’s Day.
Thousands of pounds of corned beef had been ordered, hundreds of gallons of Guinness – enough to satisfy revelers, toasting shoulder to shoulder at their bar of choice.
And yet, pub owners weren t feeling the luck of the Irish.
“We had a feeling something was going to happen,” said Tommy O Reilly, owner of Tommy Fox’s Public House, a beloved Bergenfield institution.
COVID-19 cases were trickling into the state. On March 11, officials in Morristown and Bergenfield announced that their St. Patrick’s Day parades would be rescheduled for September (of course, they were later canceled outright). The Bergen County St. Patrick’s Day parade passes right by Tommy Fox’s and is typically a big day for business.
