mmaroney@sungazette.com A veteran Williamsport Bureau of Police lieutentant claims in a federal lawsuit that he was passed over for promotions because he filed complaints on behalf of the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 29 against anti-union activity. Lt. Steven Helm, supervisor of daywatch, this week asserted in the complaint in U.S. Middle District Court his rights to free speech were violated. The lawsuit identified Mayor Derek Slaughter, former Mayor Gabriel J. Campana and the City of Williamsport as defendants. Slaughter, who returned a telephone call for comment, said any statements regarding the lawsuit would need to come from J. David Smith or Austin White, the city solicitors and firm of McCormick Law.

Councilman Adam Yoder, committee chairman, said over the past seven or eight months the committee looked at the financial and logistical options of either remaining in the building or relocating to Trade and Transit Centres I or II in the 100 block of West Third Street. By staying in City Hall, if that’s what council votes on, it will mean accessibility projects will be a priority, including a ramp on the west side of the building leading into the police department connecting with the existing ramp.

Feb 8, 2021 City police are searching for information pertaining to an alleged armed robbery that occurred on the 2200 block of West Third Street Saturday evening. A black male dressed in all black clothing, who was wearing a white mask and glasses, allegedly pointed a gun at several victims and attempted to rob them sometime before 8:36 p.m., when officers were dispatched to the scene. “The actor reportedly did rob one of the victims before fleeing the area on foot to the southeast,” Damon Hagan, city police chief, wrote in a press release. Williamsport police investigate shooting on Stinson Alley | News, Sports, Jobs

City police are investigating an alleged shooting that occurred about 2 p.m. Monday. Police were dispatched to Stinson Alley near Park Avenue, according to Police Chief Damon Hagan, where a man suffered a non-life-threatening bullet wound. The victim went to UPMC Susquehanna Williamsport Regional Medical Center on his own, Hagan said. Police at the scene confirmed they followed a trail of blood to the location where the victim was most likely shot. Hagan asked anyone with information connected to the shooting to speak to Aaron Levan, the police officer supervising the investigation, at 570-327-7548.
