Following a hectic night at the DECC after an ammonia leak was discovered inside the Curling Club, the Duluth Fire Department is reflecting on what feels like divine timing.
This is because they recently obtained one of four hazmat rigs in all of Minnesota and Tuesday night was the first time they used it to clear the DECC of ammonia.
“It was not only a good opportunity for us to help the DECC, but it was a good opportunity for us to get some real, live training,” Rob Morehouse, Tech Services Coordinator for the Duluth Fire Department said.

Hazmat crews were investigating the origin of the leak.

An ammonia leak at the Duluth Curling Club prompted an evacuation of the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center on Tuesday evening.
Just before 7 p.m., the Duluth Fire Department responded to a call for a possible ammonia leak at the curling club, according to a news release. Crews at the scene confirmed that ammonia was in the space and began evacuating the curling club, Pioneer Hall and most other areas of the DECC. Only Amsoil Arena and Marcus Theaters were not evacuated. Harbor Drive is also in the process of being shut down.

Duluth s Harbor Drive is back open after the DECC was evacuated for an ammonia leak Tuesday night. City officials say a formal update on the situation is expected sometime Wednesday morning.
The DECC said staff discovered the leak in a cooling system in the area of the Curling Club. The staff immediately notified the Duluth Fire Department around 7 p.m.
A Hazmat team was on scene and investigating the source of the leak.
Harbor Drive has been shut down and the DECC has been evacuated after an ammonia leak was discovered at the Duluth Curling Club.
