Mary Rominger: Daniel, what kind of drive does someone like you have to have to accomplish all that you’re accomplishing at this age, whether it be going to school to pursue education to umpiring as often as you do? Dan Schroeder: Persistence is one of my biggest qualities. I like to make sure that I’m doing something and staying busy. I’ve often thought that if something is worth doing, there’s only one way to do it and that’s all the way.

Summit County officials discuss wildfire management practices in town hall

Photo from Sheriff Jaime FitzSimons On Wednesday, May 26, Summit County hosted a virtual town hall that focused on wildfire management practices. “We know that wildfire is top of mind,” Summit County Commissioner Elisabeth Lawrence said. “It certainly is for us at the county, and I assure you it is for all of our local agencies, as well. Just in terms of the historic drought we’re dealing with, the super dry soil, it’s more than just a drought at this point. It’s only springtime, and we’re in drought conditions already.” During the town hall, experts from the U.S. Forest Service, local fire districts, Summit County and other agencies gave insights about what their departments are doing to mitigate the risk of wildfires in the area.

Summit wildfire council recommends 11 projects for mitigation and infrastructure funding

Photo by Ashley Low During its quarterly meeting last week, the Summit County Wildfire Council recommended the approval of 11 grant proposals meant to help mitigate the risk of wildfires in the community through hazardous fuels reduction projects and other efforts to move forward with the implementation of the Community Wildfire Protection Plan. About 30 community members tuned into a virtual wildfire council meeting Thursday, May 20, when members voted on a number of grant proposals submitted by towns, resident groups and other stakeholders around Summit County. There were 11 proposals, all of which the council recommended funding a potential investment of more than $333,000 from the county government.
