HBO has a new sheriff in town on Sunday nights. In
Mare of Easttown, which premieres April 18 and runs for seven weeks, Kate Winslet returns to TV for the first time in a decade to play Mare, a detective in a fictional small Pennsylvania town.
Mare is a well-known hometown hero, but the unsolved case of her high school classmate’s missing daughter has already begun to erode her professional reputation when tragedy strikes another young girl in the close-knit area. What begins as a story of a local detective tasked with solving a murder quickly becomes a twisting tale of small town secrets and trauma. It’s both a gripping mystery and a portrait of interconnected families wading through deep hardship more poignant and well-rounded than many recent crime shows.
Fans of the regional, character-driven mysteries of Dennis Lehane such as “Mystic River” and “Gone Baby Gone” should make time for HBO’s excellent “Mare of Easttown” as it shares a similar tone regarding the ripple effect of crime on a small town. Fans of HBO literary mystery adaptations like “Sharp Objects,” “Big Little Lies,” and “The Undoing” should do the same. The truth is that anyone with HBO needs to add this to their weekly schedule as it’s the first true must-see drama of 2021, an excellent ensemble piece that works as character study, murder mystery, and actor’s showcase. Finely detailed in both setting and character, it’s a tapestry of a mini-series, a piece that centers one of our best living actors while also providing rich, complex characters for an extended ensemble of fantastic performers. Still considered a hero by the town for winning her high school state basketball championship 25 years prior, Mare’s work as a police officer is somewhat overlooked, with the case of a missing girl hanging over both her career as well as her relationships with friends and family. But when a dead body is found in the local creek, Mare must work with a country detective, played by Evan Peters, to solve this sinister murder case.
