Journal Sentinel Stops Printing Mugshots, Citing Racial Justice Concerns | 1310 WIBA

By Dan O Donnell May 13, 2021 The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel will no longer print mugshots of criminal suspects, multiple sources tell The Dan O Donnell Show. During a lengthy newsroom meeting Wednesday, the newspaper s senior editors announced a change in policy that was prompted by social justice concerns. Apparently they think that running mug shots perpetuates racial biases, said one source. They don t want readers drawing racist inferences if they run mug shots of minority suspects. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel has not yet responded to a request for comment and has not yet publicly announced its change in policy. In 2018, Journal Sentinel owner Gannett removed all mugshot galleries from its websites and last June announced that it would remove such galleries from all sites owned by the former GateHouse Media. GateHouse Media acquired Gannett and took its name in early 2020.

House of Correction Bans Thin Blue Line as White Supremacist Symbol | News/Talk 1130 WISN

By Dan O Donnell Apr 19, 2021 The new superintendent of the Milwaukee House of Correction (HOC) has banned the use of the thin blue line, an image that shows support for law enforcement, calling it a white supremacist symbol. Displaying white nationalist symbols, slogans or other identifying iconography on clothing, supplies, coffee mugs, masks etc. is not permissible at the HOC, HOC superintendent Chantell Jewell said in an email to staff last week. It has been brought to my attention that there were shirts and mugs distributed to staff that have a Spartan s Helmet and a flag with a blue line through it. Both symbols have been adopted by white supremacy groups. These symbols are inappropriate and threaten the integrity of the HOC.
