Red Cross Volunteers to share free fire safety resources with Georgia residents this Spring

Statewide push to reach residents through Sound the Alarm effort Credit: redcross.org Red Cross volunteers will Sound the Alarm throughout the state of Georgia as part of a national effort to educate people about home fire safety Author: 11Alive Staff Updated: 12:00 AM EDT April 8, 2021 ATLANTA Home fires haven’t stopped during COVID-19. In fact, home and apartment fires are trending up by 25% in Georgia, so far this year. Through targeted outreach, we’re working with community partners to connect with families and educate kids online about fire safety. Most people don’t realize they only have two-minutes to escape a home fire. Through virtual and digital outreach, we’re helping families develop escape plans and learn fire safety. Daylight saving time: Turn your clock, test your smoke alarms

As people turn their clocks forward one hour for daylight saving time Sunday, the Georgia Red Cross is encouraging people statewide to also test their smoke alarms. Since the start of the year, Georgia Red Cross volunteers have aided more than 2,300 people, following over 900 home and apartment fires across the state, including 21 families who were displaced as a result of a large apartment fire that occurred at the MAA Brookhaven apartment complex in DeKalb County last week. Day and night, volunteers have been on-hand to deliver help with urgent needs like emergency lodging, financial assistance, and recovery planning to families impacted by disaster.

How the Red Cross served in 2020 – Nearly 13,000 people – enough to fill Atlanta’s State Farm Arena to over half its capacity, are the number of individuals that the American Red Cross of Georgia has aided across the state this year following a variety of disasters.   As the holiday season and year-end giving come to a close, the Red Cross is reminding Georgians that it’s not too late to “Give Something that Means Something” with a donation that will bring comfort and hope to neighbors in need whenever the next disaster strikes.
