A large crowd of La Jolla parents and students gathered outside Bird Rock Elementary School the morning of Feb. 18 to protest ongoing school closures resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic.
The parents, whose children attend the five San Diego Unified School District sites in La Jolla, said they are frustrated that schools remain closed to regular in-person instruction without a firm date or criteria for reopening.
Once again, the Riverhead community is stepping up to show support to high school seniors.
Through a Facebook group, people can sign up to “adopt” seniors from Riverhead High School, a class that parents say have been struggling amid the pandemic, hybrid learning and grappling with cuts to sports, clubs and music programs on an austerity budget.
“It’s overwhelming and the kids need something now,” said Keri Stromski, who has a daughter in the senior class. “We’re trying to let kids know ‘we love you,’ and we know things are hard, but we’re here.”
Parents or family members who join the group can post a photo of their graduate and write about their accomplishments and interests. Then, anyone wishing to ‘adopt’ the student can get in touch, exchanging words of support or small gifts. “It doesn’t have to be big, it doesn’t have to be splashy,” Ms. Stromski said, adding that a little bit of encouragement goes a long way.
SDUSD needs more transparency about school reopening plans
The lack of transparency on the part of the San Diego Unified School District and the teachers union on school reopening plans shows a lack of respect for the parent community and is a breeding ground for resentment and toxicity in our schools.
At no point during this pandemic have any parents I know tried to place people in harm’s way, but rather have tried to show their support for the safe options that do exist going as far as to submit official proposals for outdoor classrooms complete with all logistics involved, pledging countless hours and whatever it would take in terms of volunteerism to make a personalized approach for each individual school site.
