The U.S. Geological Survey says that increasing global surface temperatures contribute to more powerful storms as more water vapor is evaporated into the atmosphere.
The numbers don’t add up if the world is to have an even chance of limiting the global average temperature increase to 1.5 °C above where it stood at the start of the Industrial Revolution.
That’s according to a major new 224-page report by the International Energy Agency (IEA).
“Are Victoria’s bikeways really wasteful and unfair?” asks Todd Litman in his recent commentary. Well, “unfair” is a tough call, the word being so subjective. But “wasteful,” I believe, is a slam-dunk. We can subject “wasteful” to some objective criteria. For starters, what if you defined “wasteful” as being either buying something that you don’t need, or paying too much for something that you want? Would many people disagree with those definitions? Now let’s look at the bike lanes, beginning with the latest projects on Vancouver and Richardson streets. Many people have complained that these are unnecessary, have called them solutions to non-existent problems, or in fact creating problems where none existed before.
He claims that bikeways improve lives for local residents, with which I agree. But he also directs people to move into town if they prefer to reduce their impact. As if choosing where you live is that simple. My rebuttal to that is only a personal story, but I imagine I am not in the minority of home seekers. In 2017, we were losing our rental home. As the market for rentals was crazy at the time, we sought to purchase a home. My wife and I are both slightly above-average income earners, and yet, the nearest home we could purchase, given what we were pre-approved for, was in Sooke.
