KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) â Officials with the American Red Cross announced Tuesday that it is experiencing a severe blood shortage as the number of trauma cases, organ transplants and elective surgeries rise.
Todd Kulman with the ARC says donors of all blood types â especially type O and those giving platelets â are urged to make an appointment to give as soon as possible to prevent delays to critical patient care.
Right now, the Red Cross needs to collect more than 1,000 additional blood donations each day to meet current demand as hospitals respond to an unusually high number of traumas and emergency room visits, organ transplants and elective surgeries.

Mount Clemens apartment residents caught in fire have lost all
Mount Clemens A massive fire that ripped through a Mount Clemens apartment complex led to a frightening scene late Saturday as residents were rousted from their units in bitter cold and sought escape routes.
Multiple residents were taken to a hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries, the Macomb County Sheriff s Office said in a tweet Sunday. The residents affected by the fire lost all of their belongings in the blaze, the apartment managers acknowleged in an email Sunday.
The fire at the Holiday Garden Apartments on North River Road was reported about 11:30 p.m. Saturday in one of the three-story apartment buildings. Residents reportedly were jumping from windows and balconies to safety because stairwells were filled with smoke, according to Joseph Cady, a resident who arrived home from work early Sunday as crews battlethe blaze
