Winter weather alert in effect for Dawson County, flash freezing possible

No reports of ice on Dawson County roads after overnight freezing temperatures Even with the freezing temperatures that hit North Georgia overnight, Dawson County officials say that as of 7 a.m. no state, county or city roads have been closed due to icy weather.   In a Facebook post on Tuesday morning, Dawson County Fire and Emergency Services said that anyone that comes across a roadway with icy conditions should call and report it to the 911 dispatch center at (706) 344-3636.  PREVIOUS STORY: Dawson County residents are warned to use caution when driving and to avoid unnecessary travel from Monday evening through to Tuesday morning as roadways are treated ahead of a potential flash freeze, according to a press release by the Georgia Department of Transportation.

Winter weather advisory issued for Dawson County Perimeter Road is covered with snow and ice on Feb. 8, 2020. - photo by Jessica Taylor The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for Dawson County that will be in effect from 6 p.m. on Saturday, Feb 6 until noon on Sunday, Feb. 7.  In an alert issued on Saturday morning, officials said that snow accumulations of one to two inches are possible, with higher amounts possible at elevations of 1500 feet and above. Lower elevations may get up to an inch of snow.  Affected areas under the winter weather advisory include Dawson, Fannin, Gilmer and Pickens. Drivers are warned to be careful when going out while the advisory is in effect.

Officials said snow accumulations of between two and four inches and light ice accumulations are expected in the mountains of northeast Georgia from 7 p.m. on Thursday evening through 7 p.m. on Friday.  Affected areas will likely include parts of Dawson, Fannin, Gilmer, Lumpkin, Towns, Union and White Counties. Accumulations are expected mainly at elevations above 1,500 feet, but winter storms and freezing temperatures could occur and impact travel during the storm at lower elevations, the warning notes. So residents in the affected areas should plan on encountering slippery road conditions if they venture out.
