Hedingham School students enjoy first school trip in over a year

SIXTH form pupils were able to say goodbye to the confines of the classroom for the first time in more than a year after taking part in a school trip. A-level biology students from the Hedingham School enjoyed their first school trip since the easing of Covid-19 restrictions. The teenagers were cheering when their minibus left the school grounds for a day trip to the Daws Hall nature reserve in Lamarsh. The trip was an opportunity to investigate a wide range of different habitats. Students carried out ecological sampling in meadows, a stream and the River Stour to assess what species were there.

The Daws Hall Nature Reserve in Lamarsh has welcomed the return of turtle doves. It is the third year in a row the bird breed has retuned to the reserve. Almost half the size of the average wood pigeon, the speckled turtle dove is described by the reserve as an “iconic” migratory visitor to the UK. The bird is perhaps most familiar for its place in The Twelve Days of Christmas, where the turtle dove is a symbol for enduring love, most significant when found in a pair. But the reserve is warning the birds are becoming more endangered each year.
