Our recommendation for Dallas City Council, District 5
Incumbent Jaime Resendez faces a trio of challengers.
We recommend incumbent Jaime Resendez for a second term representing District 5 on the Dallas City Council.
Resendez, who was elected to the open seat in 2019, faces challengers Ruth Torres and Yolanda Williams, both of whom sought the seat two years ago, and Terry Perkins.
Resendez, an attorney and former Dallas school board member, shows leadership skills but at times can be perplexing. In the Voter Guide, Resendez wrote that residents want faster police responses, a crackdown on speeding and racing drivers, and an end to random gunfire and drug activity. However, he surprised us when he suggested that the public perception of gang violence in the district is exaggerated.

Cal D. McCowin is being celebrated in Dallas. The World War II Army veteran was born on April 4, 1922, and according to his family, he is one of the most selfless men they know.
“He has just done so much for his country, his family and this city,” his wife Bobbie said. “He never wants to talk about himself, so when they [City of Dallas] called and said they wanted to honor him, I told him he should accept.”

While he was signing his apartment lease agreement, reader Abel Tomatis noticed an interesting clause.
Under the parking section, the agreement required all residents to park head-in into marked spaces. If they back into a parking space, residents may be towed at their own expense. The lease indicated that back-in parking violates a Dallas City ordinance.

This far northeast Dallas district, which includes Lake Highlands, faces persistent crime, economic development and affordable housing challenges. Crime in the Forest-Audelia area and several projects or proposals related to low-income housing and homelessness have stirred concern about the overall direction of the district.

The Dallas City Council elections are May 1 and early voting starts Monday. All 14 council seats are contested, and three districts, 2, 11 and 13, will see new faces as the incumbents have reached term limits. The other 11 incumbents face challengers. This is the fourth of 14 stories on the races, which started with coverage of the three open seats. The rest are being featured in ascending numerical order.
