Five Island Lake Assoc. By Staff | May 25, 2021 Five Island Lake awaits boats, skiers, swimmers and summer lake enthusiasts. Before all of this lake activity gets into full swing, here are a few reminders about water safety so everyone has fun and stays protected. Young people between the ages of 12 and 17 are required to pass a boater safety course and carry a boater education card before operating a motorized vessel that runs over 10 mph. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources offers an approved online boater safety course that can be accessed at www-ed.com/iowa. The lifetime card is worth it.

Five Island Lake Assoc. By Staff | May 11, 2021 Bodies of water provide a myriad of outdoor activities throughout the seasons. Adults can be seen on Five Island Lake fishing, boating, skiing, ice fishing, kayaking, cross country skiing, congregating on the sandbar and giving friends and family a view of the lakeshore from a pontoon. It is evident from smiling faces, laughter and the constant activity on the lake that it provides fun, amusement, joy and entertainment. What do other groups, such as teenagers think of Five Island Lake? With the help of Emmetsburg Community School Librarian JaDee Gloede, several Emmetsburg High School students were willing to offer their opinions. They took the time to complete a short survey provided by the Five Island Lake Association. It was clear from their comments that they value having a lake as a resource for gatherings and activities.

Five Island Lake Assoc. By Staff | Apr 13, 2021 Common carp and big mouth buffalo. Unless you live on a lake or fish regularly these are not species that most people are even aware exist. But to those that know, these fish are not welcome in waters that provide recreational activities, lake living and a connection to a pleasing natural resource. Both fish can be a nuisance, become over abundant and adversely affect water clarity and health. Lake protective organizations throughout Iowa work with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources and their eight fish hatcheries around the state to manage invasive fish species. According to Mike Hawkins, Fisheries Biologist at the Spirit Lake Fish Hatchery, (who contributed to this column) the common carp is a non-native invasive fish that was introduced in the United States in the late 1800’s.
