Jacques d’Amboise, an exuberant star of the New York City Ballet for three decades and a favorite of its legendarily exacting choreographer George Balanchine before becoming a champion of arts education, died May 2 at his home in Manhattan. He was 86. The cause was complications from a stroke, said his daughter, the actress Charlotte d’Amboise. Balanchine was famously fixated on female dancers, turning to them as artistic muses and making them the centerpieces of his ballets. The event kicked off with the singing of the Black national anthem, “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” which was written as a poem in 1900 by James Weldon Johnson and set to music by his brother J. Rosamond Johnson in 1905 for the anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s birthday.
