In the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, UW Hospital joined select medical centers in treating severely ill patients with antibodies from donors who had recovered from infections, with five of the first six patients in Madison improving enough to be released from the hospital.

Madison-area people who recovered from milder cases of COVID-19 responded to the effort by donating blood in droves, with the area at one point accounting for a third of the nationâs supply of what is known as convalescent plasma. A blood drive by UW-Madison students in October added nearly 450 donors, and UW Health urged more plasma donations in early January, citing a âcritical need.â
