Officers with the Ontwa Township Edwardsburg Police Department were dispatched to a house in the 25000 block of Maple Street, a few miles southeast of Edwardsburg, around 1:40 p.m. on Sunday.
The girl was pronounced dead at the scene after suffering a single gunshot wound.
Edwardsburg Police Chief Douglas Westrick said the boy and the girl were friends and that the incident took place inside the house where the boy lived. Police do not know yet if the safe holding the gun was locked at the time, but Westrick said the boy knew the safe s combination. He added the firearm was a long gun and not a handgun.Â
