Jersey Shore town hires attorney to investigate beach patrol sex abuse claims

Ocean City, N.J., officials on Friday said they have hired a labor attorney to investigate allegations of sexual abuse within the Ocean City Beach Patrol that were posted anonymously on social media.
In a statement, a city spokesman said Vanessa E. James of the law firm Barker, Gelfand, James and Sarvas, would “conduct a confidential internal investigation of allegations against Ocean City Beach Patrol employees.”
The allegations – which were shared earlier this month on an Instagram account ocbp predators – include claims of rampant sexual abuse often committed by older members against younger members of the OCBP. The posts include stories of sexual assault against underage girls along with heavy drug and alcohol use.

Mayor Jay A. Gillian said he has started to make changes to the Ocean City Beach Patrol to deal with anonymous allegations of sexual abuse made on an Instagram account.
Many of the posts to the page called ocbp predators describe men in their 30s and 40s taking advantage of 16- and 17-year-old female lifeguards. There are frequent mentions of drugs and alcohol, teen guards being sexualized and the teens waking up not aware of what happened the night before.
Gillian said that while the Cape May County Prosecutor s Office continues its investigation, mayoral aide Michael Allegretto has been appointed to oversee the operation of the the Beach Patrol and has two immediate tasks.
