Helena says Ten Mile Creek was much more contaminated than EPA reported

Water samples taken by Helena staff in Ten Mile Creek following the Environmental Protection Agency s mine waste spill show severely higher levels of metals and arsenic than the federal agency s test results indicated. During the Helena City Commission s Monday meeting, City Manager Rachel Harlow-Schalk updated the commissioners on the status of what the EPA is referring to as a burp that caused mining sediment from the long abandoned Susie Mine, part of the larger Upper Ten Mile Creek Mining Area Superfund site, to spill into Ten Mile Creek on July 12. According to the EPA s on-site coordinator operating in the area, Duc Nguyen, less than 100 gallons of water mixed with mining sediment was released into the creek below the city s water treatment plant intakes.

EPA: Tenmile Creek spill poses no environmental impact

Despite claims by the Helena city manager Monday that a mining spill resulted in significant contamination of Tenmile Creek, the Environmental Protection Agency on-site coordinator said based on early observations, the spill does not pose environmental impacts. EPA on-site coordinator Duc Nguyen said in a phone interview Tuesday less than 100 gallons of water mixed with mining sediment was released into Tenmile Creek from the Susie Mine, part of the Upper Tenmile Creek Mining Area. Nguyen said crew members have taken samples of the spill upstream, downstream and within the pool of sediment about 4 or 5 feet wide at the confluence. Results of those samples are expected to comeback as early as late Tuesday or early Wednesday, but Nguyen said the orange color city staff observed in the creek was mostly iron.
