NORTH MANKATO, Minn. (KEYC) The League of Minnesota Cities chose Dakota Meadows Middle School sixth grader Kate Camp as a winner in their Mayor for a Day essay contest.
Her essay was chosen from over 150 submissions from fourth, fifth and sixth graders statewide.
Camp said she was excited to win and hopes to set a good example for people in the city.
“And just try and make everyone included in whatever I’m doing,” she said.
At noon Tuesday, the second round of appointments opens up at Minnesota’s nine new publicly run COVID vaccine pilot sites.
The tech-savvy already know the drill. Have the computer fired up and ready to land on the appointment web page as the clock strikes midday. The vaccine supply allocated by federal officials to Minnesota and other states wasn’t close to meeting demand even before early eligibility was expanded earlier this month. That lowered the high-risk age from 75 to 65 and included younger people with some serious medical conditions. When so many are at the front of the line, there effectively is no front of the line.

This week Mankato elementary students had a successful return to the hybrid learning model.
Families are encouraged to continue to report their child’s illness to Health Services. Staff are available Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Staff can help identify COVID-like symptoms and explain the isolation and quarantine process.
Tentatively the district is planning for middle and high school students to return to the hybrid learning model on February 4th. The transition days for this would be February 1st and 2nd, which would be no school days for secondary students.

NORTH MANKATO, Minn. (KEYC) - The first COVID-19 vaccine doses are being administered at our local community site today.
Dakota Meadows Middle School is the local host site of the state’s COVID-19 vaccine pilot program for PreK-12 education, childcare staff, and those 65 and older. Appointments have already been scheduled for today and tomorrow and next Friday and Saturday. And with 51 doses currently available for Mankato School district employees, you may be wondering who gets the first shot at the vaccine.
