Clarkson University has connection with Mars mission

POTSDAM — A Clarkson University professor has been quite involved with Mars rover which will hunt for signs of ancient life, collect samples for its return to Earth, among other tasks. Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering Professor Suresh Dhaniyala chaired two JPL and NASA committees to review contamination control measures used in the Mars 2020 program, which launched on July 30. He was on the committee as an expert in aerosol physics and the resuspension of microbial agents from surfaces. “The Mars 2020 program is dedicated to obtaining the purest Mars samples possible for investigating different aspects of Martian geology, particularly evidence of extant life (i.e. life that might have been on Mars at one time). The success of this program necessitates that the Martian lander and probe be completely free of terrestrial microbes as we don’t want to contaminate the surface of Mars and then capture the contaminants and bring it back and conclude that the life on M

Nevin Memorial Church moving to St Lawrence Power & Equipment Museum

MADRID — The trustees of the historic Nevin Memorial Church in Lisbon have donated their church building to the St. Lawrence Power & Equipment Museum. Preparations are underway to disassemble and move the building to the Museum where it will be reconstructed and restored. The building was built 1855 and closed its doors in 2019. The church will be relocated at the Museum’s village green. It will be located on its south end, balancing the schoolhouse located at the north, and joining others including the gas station and shoe shop. The village green has been graded and foundations for the church have already been constructed. When completed, the church will be available for public use.

Broadband needs survey begins in St Lawrence County

WATERTOWN — A survey to help determine the needs and opportunities for broadband in St. Lawrence County starts Friday. The project between county officials and the Development Authority of the North Country is designed to show the location of unserved and underserved areas in the county in terms of broadband access. Similar surveys have also been done in Lewis County in November and Jefferson County in January. The data that’s collected from St. Lawrence County residents and businesses will be used to develop an action plan to address broadband needs in the county. The survey will be available until April 30.
