POTSDAM â Special banners were raised in downtown Potsdam Tuesday, designed to show appreciation and bring awareness to continuing efforts to stop the spread of the COVID-19 virus. Clarkson President Tony Collins and SUNY Potsdam President Kristin Esterberg hailed the initiative as part of the ongoing community efforts to manage the pandemic in a press release issued by the colleges.
The âOne Community, Working Together to Stop the Spreadâ banners show both universitiesâ logos and are hung throughout the downtown Potsdam area as a show of appreciation for the communityâs support of the colleges, and a reminder that we still need to work together to stop the spread of COVID-19. Potsdamâs new banners celebrate âOne Community, Working Together to Stop the Spread,â with images of the two campus mascots, Max C. Bear and the Golden Knight, with reminders to wear masks, wash hands and socially distance.
CANTON â A St. Lawrence University anthropology professor, her students, and a chemistry professor have been recognized for their expertise and commitment to preserving one local villageâs history with the New York State Historic Preservation Award for Excellence in Archaeological Stewardship.
Mindy Pitre, associate professor of anthropology and the Universityâs J. Ansil Ramsay Professor of Public Health, was called in as a bioarchaeological consultant in 2019 when the Village of Heuvelton began a project to replace its existing water tower and construction crews stumbled upon skeletal remains. Pitre was charged with excavating and analyzing any recovered remains and collaborated at the site with Tim Abel, Ph.D., a local archaeologist, and chose to involve her students in the historic experience because they all had backgrounds in human osteology thanks to the courses Pitre regularly offers.
