North Country Reflects Statewide Reaction To Cuomo Harassment Report

3:20 People in New York’s North Country appear to reflect many others in the state in calling for embattled Governor Andrew Cuomo to resign or be impeached. Carol Peters is visiting from Florida. She was in downtown Plattsburgh’s Trinity Park Wednesday. She’s heard about the charges against Governor Cuomo although she says she hasn’t followed the situation closely.  “Well I don’t think that many women could be wrong, Peters said. I think he should step down. I think he should resign.” Sitting beside Peters is Seth from North Hero, Vermont. He’s been following news reports but says he’s not sure what to think about the situation.

Local leaders react: Canadian government announces border reopening timeline

WATERTOWN — The Canadian government announced Thursday that the country will begin allowing vaccinated Americans to cross its borders for nonessential travel starting Aug. 9 — months after calls from American leaders to end the border closure. As vaccination rates rose and infection rates for COVID-19 dropped, officials including Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer, Rep. Elise M. Stefanik, R-Schuylerville, and a litany of local leaders from the north country, called for Canada to welcome Americans back into their country, and allow Canadians to cross into and out of the United States. Those first steps seem to be coming soon, but the White House pumped the brakes Monday. According to the Associated Press, White House Press Secretary Jennifer R. Psaki said the U.S. would not commit to reopening their side of the border on Aug. 9.

Future of cellular task force in doubt

Nearly two years have passed since the state’s Upstate Cellular Coverage Task Force met to improve lacking cell phone service in rural and sparsely populated communities, but officials cast doubt Thursday the group will reconvene. Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo created the Cellular Task Force, administered by Empire State Development, in September 2019. The group includes industry experts, community leaders, bipartisan lawmakers, environmental representatives and other stakeholders. The group first met Sept. 10, 2019, followed by a handful of meetings that fall. A group of upstate legislators requested an update Thursday in a letter to Cuomo and the department. “In late March, we wrote to you requesting an update on the work and progress made by the Upstate Cellular Coverage Task Force . It appears the task force has yet to report on its work, nor did we receive a response from your office to our inquiry of now more than three months ago,” according to the letter signed by Se

Editorial — Press Republican: Open the border

This editorial appeared in the Press-Republican on July 7: PLATTSBURGH — For months on end, north country officials have been pleading with Canada to consider allowing some cross-border traffic to resume, but they haven’t had much success. Now, with U.S. Sen. Majority Leader Charles Schumer on board, hopefully some progress can be made soon as summer is now well underway. “For the last two months, we haven’t seen any progress and that is not acceptable,” Schumer said during a visit to Plattsburgh [July 6]. “It is unacceptable to have no progress when summer is the season, more than any other, where we here in the north country and throughout New York state need the Canadians for our economic livelihood. And they want to come here.”
