Jeff Bahr Grand Island Independent A survey of 2,000 adults found that many people want to do something adventurous after the COVID-19 pandemic has passed. The survey found that most people are looking forward to exploring the countryside on a walking adventure. Visiting castles and other historic landmarks was the second-most popular activity that people want to do. 56% of respondents said that they would like to go on vacation to a place where they can take photos of stunning scenery. Almost one-third of people said that they would like to see the Northern Lights. Many people are looking forward to spending time at the beach or relaxing by a swimming pool. The survey, which was conducted by Icelandair, also found that 37% of respondents have already booked a trip.

Grand Island second-grader surprised at school with power wheelchair

By Jeff Bahr Grand Island Independent Ian Thompson, a second-grader at Dodge Elementary School, has sometimes had trouble getting around in his manual wheelchair. He’ll have much less difficulty now that he has a power wheelchair. Ian, 8, was surprised with the new wheelchair Monday afternoon in the Dodge gymnasium. He was also presented with a new gait trainer. Jenny Rother, a physical therapist for Grand Island Public Schools, shows Ian Thompson features of his new wheelchair Monday at Dodge Elementary School. (Independent/Josh Salmon) Josh Salmon Nineteen people, including 14 of his classmates, held up letters that read “Congratulations Ian!” at the presentation. Some of the letters were held up by his siblings: Connor, 15, Kane, 13 and Mila, 11. The group also held up balloons in the Dodge school colors, purple and yellow.

Santa Cop visits Merrick County-area children

‘Twas a few days before Christmas and all through Merrick County, Santa delivered toys from his plentiful bounty. The kids were hoping for gifts this year, but with a pandemic looming, those hopes were in fear. Santa was out early this year spreading the Christmas joy this weekend to kids and families in Merrick County. The big guy delivered toys to area girls and boys as part of the Santa Cop program organized by the Merrick County Sheriff’s Office. According to Merrick County Sheriff John Westman, this year Santa Cop delivered toys to about 178 families all over Merrick County. Westman said he is extremely grateful for the donations made by the community.
