The Massachusetts House unanimously approved a wide-ranging tax relief, paid emergency sick leave and unemployment system funding bill Thursday that would soften jobless aid insurance premium hikes set to hit businesses in the coming weeks.
Both laid-off workers and employers stand to gain access to tax breaks under the bill, which is built on a Gov. Charlie Baker proposal aimed at stabilizing the state s unemployment system and also includes provisions such as creation of a paid sick leave program for employees who are affected by COVID-19 and tax breaks on any forgiven Paycheck Protection Program loans from 2020.

Rep. Josh S. Cutler named chair of Labor Committee

PEMBROKE Rep. Josh S. Cutler has been appointed House Chairman of the Legislature’s Joint Committee on Labor and Workforce Development.
The committee has purview over a broad range of labor and employment policy, including unemployment insurance, paid family leave, worker safety, worker’s compensation, collective bargaining, workforce training, and wage and hour laws.
“I’m honored to be appointed to this key post by Speaker Mariano and my House colleagues,” said Rep. Cutler. “These are critical issues in any year, but especially now as we work to recover from the pandemic, and in some cases reimagine the role of the workplace.”

ROCHESTER State Sen. Michael Rodrigues has been awarded Legislator of the Year by the Massachusetts Developmental Disabilities Council and The Arc of Massachusetts.
On March 3, Rodrigues will accept the award and give a speech alongside co-Legislator of the Year Josh Cutler at the council’s 43rd Annual Legislative Reception. The virtual ceremony provides a forum for legislators, people with disabilities, family members and other community members to celebrate Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Awareness month.
Rodrigues was elected to the Massachusetts State Senate in 2010 and serves the First Bristol and Plymouth District, which includes Rochester.
In their work for those with disabilities, Senator Rodrigues and his staff have sponsored the Massachusetts Inclusive Concurrent Enrollment Initiative bill, supporting more inclusive higher education in the Commonwealth, as well as vying in budgetary talks for those served by the Department of Dev
