Ben Waine s last-gasp winner has ignited Wellington Phoenix s finals hopes, helping the Kiwi A-League outfit to a 3-2 defeat of Western United.
A pair of first-half penalties had the sides 1-1 at the break, and quick thinking in both boxes made it 2-2 by the hour mark.
The teams then looked destined to share the points after the Phoenix missed a spree of late chances.
As the clock ticked into injury time, two Wellington academy products combined for the winner, with Sam Sutton crossing for Waine to head past United keeper Ryan Scott.
The points lift Wellington, who may yet get to play games in New Zealand thanks to the trans-Tasman bubble, to ninth.

Wellington Phoenix 3
Western United 2
The Wellington Phoenix s two teenage academy products have combined to keep their side s A-League playoff hopes alive, clinching a last-gasp 3-2 win over Western United at WIN Stadium in Wollongong.
With the scores locked at 2-2 in the 90th minute, Sam Sutton – starting for the first time this season – found fellow 19-year-old Ben Waine with a precise cross, with Waine gleefully heading home the winner in a five-goal thriller.
Oliver Sail’s performances in goal have piqued the interest of rival A-League club Western United.
Goalkeeper Oli Sail has been impressive since he came into the Wellington Phoenix’s starting lineup four matches ago – and at least one other team has taken notice. Coach Ufuk Talay confirmed in his pre-match press conference ahead of Monday night’s trip to Western Sydney Wanderers that Western United – coached by former Phoenix boss Mark Rudan – had enquired about the services of the stopper, who would be considered a local player and not take up a visa spot. It’s all above board – players are allowed to speak to other clubs and other clubs to players once they’re in the final six months of their contract – but the Phoenix would be loath to lose a player they’ve nurtured for seven years, and it’s a reminder they have a fair bit of contracting to do themselves.
