Govt sets out more details of First Homes Scheme By Leah Milner 25 th May 2021 4:16 pm The government has set out further details of the eligibility criteria and planning guidance for its First Homes Scheme, which will offer buyers a discount of between 30% and 50% on new properties from the end of June. However, concerns have been raised that the scheme could have a negative impact on the supply of social rented homes. In a written ministerial statement yesterday, housing minister Christopher Pincher said that the homes would only be offered to those buying with a mortgage of at least 50% of the property’s value, in a bid to deter investors from taking advantage of the scheme.

Over 1m homes in England with planning permission not built

Last modified on Fri 7 May 2021 19.03 EDT More than 1.1m homes that received planning permission in England over the last decade are yet to be built, according to the Local Government Association, which called for new powers to be given to councils to encourage developers to build housing more quickly. The LGA, which represents 327 of the 333 councils in England, said that 2.78m homes have been granted planning permission by councils since 2010/11, but over the same period only 1.6m have been built. The number of planning consents granted for new homes has more than doubled since 2010, with nine in 10 planning applications being approved by councils.
