Gaston County Schools pays $70,000 to student with special needs

The Gaston Gazette Gaston County Schools paid $70,000 to a student with Down syndrome to settle a lawsuit filed against the district in January 2019. The lawsuit alleges school leaders didn’t step in when an exceptional children teacher at Kiser Elementary School abused the female student on several occasions in 2018. While parts of the lawsuit were settled in March 2020, the remaining claims against Gaston County Schools, Principal Lorinda Brusie and district human resources director Joey Clinton weren’t resolved until last month. In return of full dismissal of the lawsuit, Gaston County Schools’ agreed to pay $70,000 to the student, who was represented by Arcangela M. Mazzariello and Mathew E. Flatow of SeiferFlatow law firm in Charlotte.
