NEW YORK The Colorado Rockies wanted to make sure they didn t fall flat again when they got back to sea level.
Having started 2-17 on the road and 16-12 in the thin air at mile-high Coors Field, they started batting practice more than five hours before Monday night s game at Citi Field elevation 13 feet.
Ryan McMahon and Elias Díaz responded with second-inning solo home runs off David Peterson, Austin Gomber pitched two-hit ball through eight innings and the Rockies provided one of their better road shows, beating the banged-up New York Mets 3-2.

It was reasonable to wonder, following the Mets’ 3-2 loss to the Rockies on Monday, if Tim Tebow might have cracked the Majors by now had he not retired from baseball to play tight end for the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Mets have entered such dire straits that as they began a seven-game homestand at Citi Field, they asked catcher James McCann to man first base for the first time in his career. Later, following yet another injury, the Mets moved onto their fifth-string center fielder.

Although the Mets’ pitching has been far from perfect, it has performed remarkably well given the fact that the Mets have essentially had to forge a wooden raft rotation over the past week-plus of games. The emergency flotation device has some leaks, to be sure, but it has stayed afloat and kept the Mets alive during a time when they have two actual starting pitchers.
I said when I wrote last week’s meter that the Mets were relying on
Marcus Stroman to have a bounce back outing this week. And he did. Although he looked shaky early, Stroman ended up settling into a groove and putting together a brilliant outing on Friday night, at one point striking out five Marlins in a row. After issuing a leadoff walk in the seventh inning (his only walk of the night), Luis Rojas decided to pull Stroman after 89 pitches. New York Mets’ starting pitcher
Jordan Yamamoto left his start on Sunday after experiencing shoulder soreness.
Yamamoto, 25, surrendered five runs in a disastrous second inning on Sunday that was ultimately his undoing. The right-hander did rebound to pitch through the fourth, after which he was removed.
Post game, while meeting with members of the media via Zoom, Yamamoto said that he was unsure if he was going to have to receive an MRI for the injury.
Team manager Luis Rojas said the team is traveling back to New York and Yamamoto will be re-evaluated on Monday.
