I’ve never been very good at cultivating hobbies (whereas my brother-in-law is into creating his own baking extracts, I am into refreshing Twitter), but I do like watching movies, and the internet has made it possible for sitting on my arse in front of HBO Max to feel like a genuine leisure time pursuit.

It’s easy to use Google Maps to see how far your office is from your favourite restaurant or how long it’ll take to drive from Sydney to Melbourne (in non-locked-down times).
Estimating the distance between two locations without relying on winding roads messing up your estimate, however, is a bit more complicated. Sure, you could try and measure it with the distance scale at the bottom corner of your screen, but a quirk of Maps (which we originally learned of on reddit) makes estimating distances from point to point (or “as the crow flies”) pretty easy, whether you’re using your desktop or an Android or iOS device.

Remember movie theatres? Remember summer movies from the U.S.?
It’s been a long time (463 days as of this writing) since I last sat in a big, darkened room with strangers to experience a grand entertainment on the big screen (in that case, Cats). I truly hope to do so again soon but sadly, I don’t know if that’s going to happen this year, as I’d like to wait to do so until my kids can get vaccinated. And that’s a shame, because there is nothing quite like seeking a respite within the frigid confines of a movie theatre especially if you’re there to watch something big, loud, and over-the-top.
