He hugged his coach Kenneth Jonassen. He went on to exchange his shirt with Chen Long of China and they briefly spoke in Mandarin. It was an emotional moment as the 27-year-old Axelsen had put his years of preparation, blood, sweat and tears into that spectacular final show en route to beating defending champion Chen Long 21-15, 21-12 in 51 minutes, to become only the second Dane in 25 years after Poul-Erik Hoyer to win an Olympics badminton gold.
