Kapampangan-made Marian icon formally blessed in Spain

March 16, 2021 PREMIER ecclesiastical artist Wilfredo Layug has made another first, as his rendition of the image of the Maria Santisima del Sagrario was formally blessed on its canonical seat at the Parish of San Jose Obrero in Malaga, Spain. Layug’s latest artistic work is the first Spanish-commissioned image of the Virgin Mary that is now formally venerated in Spain, the country that brought Catholicism to the Philippines and the long standing tradition of ecclesiastical wood carving. The image was formally blessed on March 13 by Rev. Fr. Salvador Javier Guerrero Cuevas. The event was attended by members and officers of the Grupo Proquial de Padre Jesus dela Verdad ande Caifas y Maria del Sagrario and members of the Filipino community in Malaga and the Philippine Consulate in Spain.

(File photo) + March 16, 2021 THE hospitals in Mandaue City received 331 vials of AstraZeneca, each of which is equivalent to 10 doses, on Sunday, March 14, 2021. Ernie Manatad, chairman of the Mandaue City Vaccine Board and president of the Association of Barangay Councils, told SunStar Cebu that seven hospitals in Mandaue City, both public and private, had received the AstraZeneca vaccines allocated by the Department of Health (DOH) 7. Manatad said the number of doses provided to each hospital depends on the number of medical workers listed on its master list. On March 15, Manatad said 690 medical workers from hospitals in Mandaue City had been vaccinated since the arrival of the vaccine from Sinovac Biotech Ltd. last week.

Archdiocese of Cebu cancels crowd-drawing Holy Week events

Published March 12, 2021, 2:49 PM CEBU CITY – The Archdiocese of Cebu will not hold religious activities that may attract mass gatherings during the observance of the Holy Week. Fr. Japeth Geonzon, vice chair of the Archdiocese’s Commission on Worship, said Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma has released guidelines in connection with the Holy Week observance. Geonzon said that unlike in previous years, there will be no foot procession in the entire observance of the Holy Week. Holding of Station of the Cross will still be allowed but only with limited attendants. Geonzon said it will be up to the owners of private pilgrim sites such as the Q Park in Compostela, Cebu and Good Shepherd in Cebu City if they will open their facilities to the public.

Pope declares jubilee year in PH to mark 500th anniversary of Christianity

SunStar + March 05, 2021 POPE Francis has granted the entire Philippines, not just the Archdiocese of Cebu, a jubilee year for the 500th anniversary of the arrival of Christianity in the country. The year would be an opportunity to increase the virtues of faith, hope, and charity, CBCP News quoted the decree on the jubilee year, which was signed by the head of Vatican’s Apostolic Penitentiary, Cardinal Mauro Piacenza. Alongside the declaration of the jubilee year, the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) via its official publication said inherent plenary indulgence will also be granted to the faithful when they make a devotional pilgrimage to any of the designated jubilee churches until April 22, 2022.
